Using African Red Slip as an example, the paper demonstrates that ceramic abundance and scarcity can be more closely correlated with changes in the size of the vessels than macroeconomic trends. Periods when the pots are small tend to be well represented and conversely, periods when the pots were large less so. It is argued that this is the result of changes between individual and communal eating, and concludes with some speculation as to why such a simple idea has not been considered before.
