Abstract: |
Reports on geophysical survey of the round barrow cemetery and excavation of nine of the mounds. The work was undertaken as part of the Orkney Barrows Project to assess the extent of damage sustained as a result of ploughing, cattle poaching, and rabbit burrowing. Evidence of the complexity of the mounds and variety of burial rites was demonstrated. An appendix by Lorna M Campbell (28--32) reports on `Excavation and initial cleaning of steatite urn 249', and details of contexts are tabulated in an appendix giving `Concordances' (33--46). |
