Abstract:
Reference handbook for archaeologists and environmentalists. Chapters treat basic concepts and current methods in soil science, field strategies, microscope work, thin sections; then processes and features (sediments, anthropogenic features, post-depositional processes); and a number of case studies are provided including one on the 'dark earth' deposits common to most cities with long histories, especially in medieval and earlier Europe. The stress is on the information obtainable about human behaviour relating to (eg) fire, occupation remains (organic), agriculture, and buildings.
