Abstract: |
Publication of a University of Cambridge Ph D thesis (1991) -- a study of the contents of pits on sites of the pre-Roman Iron Age (c 700~BC to c AD~43) in Wessex. All aspects of finds from these pits are examined, as well as the processes involved in their deposition, survival, and recovery. Conclusions are drawn that the material recovered from such pits does not reflect their original abundance, and that such finds are no less structured (and therefore no better guide to the social realities at the time of deposition) than deposits considered to be of `ritual' origin, such as hoards and grave deposits. |
