excavations revealed an Early Bronze Age barrow which overlay a Late Neolithic level with evidence of activities over a long period; evidence of Iron Age field systems was also found. Specialist reports include

a site of Romano-British activity was revealed by trial trenching and geophysical survey followed by area excavation. Two phases of enclosure ditches, one dated to the second/third century and one to the third/fourth century, were excavated, and considerable quantities of pottery and roofing tile recovered. Evidence suggests the presence of a rural farmstead operating at a low level of subsistence. Specialist reports include

an area excavation outside the core of the village presumed to have been occupied in medieval times located Late Saxon occupation, indicated by ditches and pits with accompanying finds of pottery, on either side of a hollow-way. Further phases of activity through to the fourteenth century were recorded with a possible break in the immediate post-Conquest period. Pottery vessel forms suggest a relatively impoverished peasant economy throughout the period of occupation. Animal bones indicate that sheep was the dominant species but not used for food, while cereals were processed on or near the site, but evidence suggests little change in the exploitation of resources throughout the period of occupation. Although no evidence of a moat and slight indications of medieval occupation were found, three earlier, Saxon, phases were excavated. Early to Middle Saxon activity was indicated by ditches and possible structures associated with a small collection of pottery. Two later phases of Saxo-Norman domestic occupation occurred with a change of ditch layouts, and an area of pits.
