Abstract: |
The industry is surveyed from its beginnings in about AD 50-100 in a late pre-Roman Iron Age wheelmade tradition (not Gallo-Belgic) with production centres at Hanborough, Dorchester and elsewhere. The industry shows growth from AD 100 to 180; centres such as Cowley had a complex organization and good (though mainly local) marketing arrangements. Retraction in 180-240 appears to have been due to general economic recession, but colour-coated wares first appeared in early 3rd century. The industry was regenerated in 240-300 when new wares (eg parchment wares) were introduced and the quantity and range of products were considerably expanded, giving a prosperity which lasted until 400+. |
