Abstract: |
'Artefact studies will come into their own again because they are central to the advancement of prehistoric studies . . . the crushing routine of collecting, collating and publishing artefacts is by no means over . . .' and this volume presents fifteen studies of hoards from east of the Severn-Wash line, together with a new chronology and synthesis from the editors. Some hoards appear to represent bronze 'dumped' when the spread of iron made it redundant, but others must represent troubled times. Concepts challenged or redefined are those of the Ornament Horizon, the diffusion of Gundlingen swords (?made here by Continental immigrant workers), and the Ha C 'raiders'. The dating of the Wilburton/Ewart Park transition is now put at c 900 BC instead of 750, with consequent repercussions on the supposed connections of British cauldrons with Greek prototypes. Contributors are S Needham, A J Lawson, G L Varndell, I A Colquhoun, T H McK Clough, M Farley, D G Davies, J Bradshaw, R Savage, B Cunliffe and B O'Connor, C Gingell, and the editors. |
