Abstract: |
Analysis of the material has suggested a six-phase development and a much earlier date to the inception of single-grave burial with distinctive grave-goods. Part 1 gives the data for eighty-eight sites together with some basic tabulations. Part 2 gives the proposed developmental sequence, with mortuary practices stemming from those used in non-megalithic long mounds and related contexts; a middle phase during 3rd millennium with single burials; and a development to enclosed cremation cemeteries. Many introductions normally attributed to the Beaker phase are much earlier in date. Numerous drawings of associated material are included, and appended are data for Neo enclosures and domestic sites and for flat graves. |
