Abstract: |
Four areas were evaluated with a trenching strategy based on cropmark plots. No occupation areas were recognised. Abraded Roman pottery was a residual feature in Roman and medieval drainage and boundary ditches from one site. The activity centre producing these finds was not recognised but may be the cropmarks on the lower slope of White Hill. The majority of features appear to be associated with maintenance or development of the agricultural system, particularly drainage during the Roman and medieval periods. Environmental evidence indicates the success of these operations which resulted in alterations to the hydrological systems and the reclamation of `moor' lands indicated by medieval field names. C A I French (27) provides Appendix A, `Soils assessment'. Appendix B is a `Pottery assessment' by G Lucas (28--9). Twigs Way (30--5) contributes Appendix C, `A documentary history of the Trumpington site 2 (TL5459/2547)'. Appendix D is a `Molluscan assessment' by R Preece (36), and Twigs Way (37) gives a `Faunal analysis' as Appendix E. |
