Abstract
William Galloway and the Caisteal nan Gillean shell midden on Oronsay, western Scotland
Alan Saville
56 - 69
This note publishes in full for the first time a transcript of a manuscript written by William Galloway in association with his display at the 1883 International Fisheries Exhibition in London of the finds from Caisteal nan Gillean, a shell midden site on the island of Oronsay in the Inner Hebrides. An introduction outlines what is known of the manuscript, and its significance. A report on the excavations by Galloway never materialised other than summary accounts by Symington Grieve within his own publications, which rather gloss over Galloway's role, and descriptions, primarily of the finds, by Joseph Anderson, Keeper of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland's museum. The manuscript presented here is remarkable in showing that Galloway had a very clear understanding of the nature of the midden site and its ecological setting and of the artefactual and ecofactual remains unearthed. The recovery and subsequent description and interpretation of the latter place Galloway's work very much at the forefront of such archaeological work at the time. The manuscript is presented as an appendix with explanatory notes, with the original 1883 exhibition catalogue entry reproduced as a separate appendix. LD

A response to Meiklejohn and Woodman, 'Radiocarbon dating of Mesolithic human remains in Ireland'
Alison Sheridan
70 - 72
Response to an article in Mesolithic Miscellany Vol 22 (1), which reviewed the currently available radiocarbon dates for human remains in pre-Neolithic and Mesolithic'”Neolithic 'transition period' Ireland. Whilst providing a useful round-up, the article reopened the question of how 'Mesolithic' and 'Neolithic' are defined, and included some unintentional misrepresentation of some of the arguments relating to the transition. This brief note sets out to correct some errors and misrepresentations of the present author's position and also outlines what she considers to be the most pressing questions and issues to be addressed. Brief review of the first international and interdisciplinary conference on Mesolithic burial, held at the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale), Germany, from 18--21 September 2013. The conference aimed to summarize the extensive and diverse data on the topic and to structure the current state of research. The lectures and posters covered work in numerous different countries across Europe and beyond, including England, and will be published as a separate volume in the museum's conference proceedings series. The Centre for Baltic and Scandinavian Archaeology hosted the UISPP/IUPPS (Union Internationale des Sciences Préhistoriques et Protohistoriques / International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences) Commission for the Final Palaeolithic of Northern Eurasia for meetings on November 5th and 6th, 2013. The event was a tribute to the 80th anniversary of the seminal excavations conducted by Alfred Rust in the Meiendorf kettle hole in the Ahrensburg Tunnel Valley. Papers for the conference had been solicited under the themes: 80 years after Meiendorf '“ advances in the study of the Hamburgian; raw material use, lithic industries and blade technologies in the Final Palaeolithic; man and environment in the Late Pleistocene; and Late Palaeolithic reindeer hunters and their prey, and all of these themes were well represented in the conference programme. The case studies or regional overviews presented spanned all of Northern Eurasia, including Great Britain. The proceedings of the conference are scheduled for publication in 2015 in the series "Workshop Papers from the ZBSA", issued by the Centre for Baltic and Scandinavian Archaeology. LD
