Abstract
The Viking world
Gwyn Jones
6 - 13
Address to the Norse of the North Atlantic Conference presenting a brief summary of the causes and effects of three centuries of Viking activity in north-west Europe from the late eighth century AD.
Archaeological aspects of Norse settlement in Caithness, North Scotland
Colleen E Batey
29 - 35
Recent fieldwork in the area has broadened the picture of Norse domestic settlement, but it is still far from complete. A selection of settlements are described, including Freswick which has been the site of renewed excavation and whose fish bone remains suggest fishing on a commercial scale (see 93/446 & 93/515). All these sites were revealed by severe coastal erosion, however the distribution of stray finds suggests that more exist inland, perhaps lying under modern farms. Much information has been gained from the investigation of middens, whose quantity and quality of information remains unique in Northern Scotland for this period.
Excavations at The Biggings, Papa Stour, Shetland
Barbara E Crawford
36 - 43
The archaeological follow-up to historical investigations into the importance of Papa Stour within the Norwegian cultural and economic sphere. Examination of the domestic and associated buildings of the Late Norse period (AD 1100--1500) revealed a house site which has been occupied continuously from the Norse period to the present century. Details of the remaining original structure are described, as well as a number of pits filled with carbonised seaweed. Apparently contemporary with the earliest period of occupation, this is likely to have had some domestic function, perhaps as a lye for cloth-working.
Preliminary observations on fish remains from a Late Norse settlement in Caithness
Andrew K G Jones
220 - 227
Excavations to investigate midden layers at Freswick Links are described, including details of the sampling strategy and taphonomy of the fish remains. Factors affecting bone preservation are explored. Cod and possibly saithe were the most abundantly represented species, and recovery patterns suggest the former may have been preferred for immediate consumption while the latter was associated with bulk processing for later consumption or trade (see also 93/446 & 93/552).
