Abstract:
Papers from the World Archaeological Congress (Southampton, 1986) include contributions from 18 different countries, offering 'the first compendium of information which should be common knowledge to all archaeologists, in whatever area they work'. The editor (1-19) provides 'Introduction: the rationale of archaeological heritage management', sketching the historical development of the concept of archaeological conservation as a dimension of the heritage, justifying it in terms of cultural identity, education, tourism, and academic value, and examining how the archaeological heritage should be managed and by whom. In the section Approaches to heritage management K Kristiansen (23-9) considers the intimate links of archaeological heritage protection with political ideologies of various kinds in 'Perspectives on the archaeological heritage: history and future'. Joachim Herrmann (30-7) looks at initiatives like those of UNESCO in 'World archaeology - the world's cultural heritage'. Problems of selection for preservation are considered by C F Schaafsma (38-51) in 'Significant until proven otherwise:problems versus representative samples'. W J Mayer-Oakes (52-8) offers 'Science, service and stewardship - a basis for the ideal archaeology of the future' (USA material). 'The ICOMOS International Committee on Archaeological Heritage Management (ICAHM)' is described by Margareta Biörnstad (70-5). Regional and country studies, the next section, includes three papers on English and Irish matters: Andrew Saunders of English Heritage (152-63) calls for an end to 'muddling through' in 'Heritage management and training in England': we need more productive and more professionally trained heritage managers. G J Wainwright (165-70) describes the work of English Heritage in 'The management of the English landscape', while Ann Hamlin performs a like task in 'Government archaeology in Northern Ireland' (171-81). Of several Case studies which follow, Stonehenge receives attention from two authors: F N Golding of English Heritage describes (256-64) the many problems relating to the presentation of the site in 'Stonehenge - past and future', while P V Addyman (264-71) offers a radical solution in 'The Stonehenge we deserve'. In the following section (Training and qualification of archaeologists for heritage management) he also offers a description of the Institute of Field Archaeologists in 'The role of the professional institution' (302-7).
