Abstract: |
Excavation of a large area of the city centre revealed a complex sequence of development and occupation from the late first century AD until the early post-medieval period. From limited occupation in the later-first century AD, drainage operations allowed the development of a series of well-spaced, well-appointed town houses with hypocausts and mosaics in the later Romano-British period. Following the withdrawal of Roman administration in the early-fifth century, and a period of abandonment or limited usage of the site until the later ninth century, the area became densely settled by the mid-thirteenth century. Two tenements, one of high status, and the other more typical of the general area were examined in detail. This report is a short summary of the main results of the investigations. It outlines the major phases of activity and occupation. Includes appendices on `Romano-British ceramics - preliminary report' Rebecca Cherry (72), & `Fuller's earth - report of analysis by Hampshire Scientific Service' (72-3). |
