Abstract: |
This mound on a gravel promontory on the lower Welland Valley/fen--edge interface revealed a complex sequence of Early Bronze Age burial activity overlying evidence of Neolithic occupation and clearance activities. An initial inhumation surrounded by rings of concentric stakes was closely superseded by a gravel--revetted earthen barrow enclosed by a substantial ring--ditch. This first barrow was soon remodelled by a perimeter trench with a continuous arrangement of posts and an inhumation, followed by removal of part of the post trench, another inhumation and closing the circle of posts. Shortly afterwards, the whole monument was again remodelled with a ring--ditch of greater diameter and a second earthen mound with gravel revetment and a wide berm; a group of cists and cremations was integral with the revetment. Finally, further cremations were inserted into the berm. Peat engulfed the mound in the later Bronze Age.Specialist contributions are as follows: `Aerial photographic evidence for ring--ditches and barrows in the Little Duke Farm area' (4--5) by R Palmer; `The site in its setting and adjacent salvage excavations' (5--13) by T Lane; `The lithic assemblage from barrow DEN 26' (13--14) by M Edmonds; `The resistivity survey of barrow DEN 26' (15) and `The resistivity and magnetic susceptibility surveys of the DEN 28 mound' (18--19) by A Challands; `The magnetometer survey' (15--17) by J Gater; `The radiocarbon determinations' (42--6) by G T Cook & A Bayliss; `The worked flints' (57--61) by J Richards; `The pottery' (61--9) by K Gdaniec; `The jet beads' (70--2) by A Sheridan & M Davis; `The human remains' (72--3) and `The human skeletal inventory' (Appendix 2) by C Osborne; `The animal bone' (73) by R Luff; `The plant macro--fossils' (74--9), `Notes on vegetative plant remains and barren samples' (Appendix 3) and `The molluscs' (79-- 80) by P Murphy; `The pollen analysis' (81--8) by R G Scaife; `The soil micromorphological analyses' (88--95) and `The detailed soil micromorphological descriptions' (Appendix 4) by C French.
