Abstract: |
An extensive programme of wet-sieving led to the recovery of over 6,000 fish remains, including both bones and scales. This has provided the first opportunity for a detailed study of fish and fishing in the economy of Leicester, from the Roman through to the post-medieval period. A variety of marine and freshwater species were imported into the town, the former including large individuals. The range of species available to the townsfolk seems to have been greater in medieval and post-medieval times than during the Roman period; an indication of the development of the fishing industry and trade in marine fish. |
