Abstract: |
This is the second of two archive reports for the five sites that will be covered in Volume 1 of the publication report on The Lanes. The excavations recovered material dating mainly from the earlier Roman (first/second centuries AD) and the medieval (twelfth/thirteenth centuries) periods. During the Roman period, the area was part of the civilian settlement and the animal bones will form a contrast to the large quantities of material already recovered from military and quasi-military areas of the city. Cattle bones dominate the Roman collection, but less so than in the military areas of the city. An isolated mandible of a bear was recovered from a twelfth/thirteenth century post-trench. This jaw may have been a curiosity, kept from a dancing bear. An appendix gives the anatomical zones recorded for this collection (48). |
