Abstract: |
The discovery in the 17th century that frost could be used to split the Stonesfield oolite into thin slabs for roofing purposes led to the rise of the industry which was active until the early 20th century. There is no evidence for a medieval industry, and the Roman roof-slabs of this stone were used in unfrosted form only. The author treats the geology of the Stonesfield area, the development of the industry, the 19th-century tools and techniques, roofing techniques, and provides a gazetteer of the known shafts, adits and workings. Comparisons are made with the related techniques for Collyweston (Northamptonshire) stone. |
