Abstract:
TR 021617; TR 020618. 1) A Belgic settlement in a sub-rectangular enclosure began towards end 1st cent BC, its ditches largely silted by mid-1st cent AD. To the E was a aitched ?field-system partly overlain by a Roman villa of several periods, starting about AD 70-100 as a simple four-room range with verandah, gradually being elaborated until it was abandoned in 3rd cent. 2) The Abbey, founded 1147 and demolished after 1538, was also excavated; five acres were stripped to recover plans of the entire church and most of the claustral buildings. The scale as originally planned was that of a church of the first rank; unusually the cloister was placed to the N of the church. However, financial difficulties c 1220 dictated a severe curtailment of the plan, although some parts of the structure were brought up to date. Two minor phases followed between 1250 and 1350; in 1400-1450 a stone porch and a small circular tower were added to the W end, and two barns were built. In the main cemetery, over fifty-four graves were recorded, although few of these were examined in detail.
