Abstract: |
Excavations revealed the activities of the Fleet during 2nd century: fort begun AD 117, abandoned when partly built; c 130/40 a similar but larger (1ha) fort of atypical plan was walled in stone and contained granaries, central buildings and barracks for a garrison of 600-700 men (10 warships?). This fort, abandoned c 154/5, was reoccupied 163/5 to 180 with many repairs and rebuildings. More alterations were made in the last phase, 190/200-208; soil covered all by 270. |
