Abstract:
TG 235032; 228039. Section I gives the history of discovery of the cemeteries, with a consideration of the Roman coins, late Roman military equipment and the Roman occupation in general. Sections II and III treat the cremations and inhumations respectively, with their gravegoods, of the Caistor-by-Norwich (= Caistor St Edmund) cemetery including specialist contributions on the Roman pots re-used for AS cremations, the runic inscriptions, the textiles and the human remains. Section IV, on the Markshall cemetery, includes discussions on Middle Saxon pottery (Ipswich Ware now seen to start c 630-40 rather than later), and the human remains. Appended is a gazetteer of E Anglian burials and a note on experimental firing of replica AS pottery.
