Four excavations in advance of threats revealed a 10% sample (but not a representative, 'castellan' one) of the sequence from motte (possibly 11th century) to early or mid 12th century Castle Hall and Vault, with quay; 13th century developments, with royal focus on quay (?wine imports for royal residences); second garderobe; late 13th century lime kiln for renovations; skeleton group (from French raid?) intense activity 1378-88 with complete redesign: new keep, tower, gates, gunports. From 14th, emphasis shifted to town defence. |
