A reconsideration of the prehistoric flint assemblage from Bourne Pool, Aldridge, Staffordshire
Alan Saville

SP 069998. The collection contains Mesolithic and later implement types; in conjunction with similar flint assemblages from the Midlands, it necessitates a revision of the former view that the prehistoric Midlands were archaeologically barren or backward. The Bourne Pool site represents accumulated debris from successive occupations.

Letocetum, Christianity and Lichfield
Jim T Gould

Several pieces of evidence may cumulatively betoken a much earlier church than Chad's of AD 669, there are place-names with Walton and eccles elements, documentary and elegaic references, and a small chi-rho embossed bowl. While not even the sum of these is conclusive, there remains a possibility of continuity of Christianity in Lichfield from RB to modern times.

Sixth report of excavations at Tamworth, Staffs (1971): a section of the Saxon and medieval defences, Albert Road

SK 209043. The Saxon defences comprised a rampart of turf and timber construction associated with a ditch from which it was separated by a 6-metre berm; the medieval defences consisted of a deep ditch with associated bank immediately to the south. Au See also pp 38-44 in the same volume reporting F T Wainwright's 1960 excavations of the northern defences.

SK 115095. Sherds, medieval shoes and horn cores found on the council rubbish tip had come from a deep sewer excavation in the former shoemakers' quarter. The shoes date to 1400-1550 and show the development from simple turnshoes to welted examples with insoles; they were oft-repaired before being discarded. A glossary of shoe terms is provided and local documentation cited. The pottery is Cistercian ware of c 1500.
