Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by AOC Archaeology on the 15th November 2005 ahead of a proposed residential development at the land to the rear of 4 Southside Common, Wimbledon. A single trench was excavated utilising a JCB 3CX with a toothless ditch bucket. The deposits observed represent a gradual and uninterrupted sequence of late post-medieval and modern material. The lowest deposits represent the presence of open ground, followed by the insertion of multiple of drainage services suggesting late 18th/19th century human occupation in proximity to the site. The addition of further top-soil material confirms the creation of the site into a modern garden environment, as it currently exists. No archaeological features were recorded on the site.
