Abstract:
The geophysical survey results presented in this report form part of an archaeological investigation carried out by Time Team for Channel 4 television. Magnetic survey revealed a profusion of anomalies of archaeological interest throughout the areas investigated. The responses comprised a complex of linear ditches and trackways associated with Roman buildings, and a segment of a large Iron Age enclosure ditch. Numerous pits, several potential industrial-type responses and discrete areas of enhancement, directly associated with the surviving building foundations, are visible in the data. While the main ditches surrounding the Roman buildings on the south, west and north have been located, time did not permit a thorough investigation of the north-eastern limits of the core area. Anomalies of archaeological interest extend in all directions beyond the areas surveyed. Resistance survey confirmed the findings of the magnetic survey and identified several structural elements. Some of the more amorphous high resistance responses were found, on excavation, to be natural in origin.
