Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches for extensions for a sitting room to the south and a conservatory to the north-east of the farmhouse at Ashen House Farm, Ashen. The house was built c.1540 on the site of a medieval moated enclosure, with a fish pond and leat. The area of the sitting room extension exposed a stub of brick wall and a robber trench, interpreted as the end wall of an outbuilding extending westwards from the south end of the existing house, forming an enclosed yard in the north-west of the moated site. The brickwork is of 16th-century date. The outbuilding was not shown on the 1839 Tithe Map and must have been demolished by then. An 18th-century brick drain was also recorded in the sitting room extension area. The area of the conservatory was heavily disturbed.
