Abstract:
The evaluation comprised the excavation of two machine excavated trenches. Trench 1 revealed the natural gravel overlaid by subsoil and agricultural soil which were cut by three circular pits, two filled with gravel and clay with the third filled by grey sandy clay. Pottery recovered from the pits was dated to the 14th century. No archaeological remains were recorded in Trench 2 due to complete truncation of the natural gravels and subsoil horizon by deep concrete and brick foundations and associated land management. Following the results of the evaluation and after discussions with the Archaeological Advisor, a watching brief was conducted on the northern area of the site during the intrusive groundworks associated with pile holes and groundbeam trenches. No further medieval archaeological features were recorded during the watching brief. Several modern wall footings were recorded which were associated with the buildings that previously occupied the site.
