Abstract: |
Building recording carried out prior to renovation of a Grade II Listed former town house into offices. Documentary research demonstrated that the property was built in an area of planned development established as building plots in the late 1790s, although the take-up was at first very slow. The pair of properties including Nos. 4 and 6 were not constructed until shortly before 1821. Details of occupiers are uncertain, but in the early 20th century it was used by the Lancaster Society of Friends, who built a large meeting house next door. Within the building four main phases of development were identified: the initial construction, the addition of a small outshut to the rear in the early 19th century, perhaps to form a wash house, a further addition to the north in the late 19th century to provide a separate bathroom, and less structural but very damaging changes in the later 20th century, which removed many original features. |
