Abstract:
In January 2007, ARCUS were commissioned by Kevin Tyree to undertake a desk-based assessment of a field at Norton Common Road, Norton, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, in association with a planning application for the creation of a fishpond. The assessment comprised a site visit and documentary, cartographic and photographic research. The only archaeological features in the immediate vicinity are possible cropmark enclosures visible in fields to the northeast and east of the site, and the post-medieval drainage ditches at the northern and southern ends of the fields. The cropmarks may be associated with the Iron Age/Romano-British field systems and dispersed settlement recorded to the west of Norton. The land was marshy common from the medieval period until the Enclosure Award of 1814. The potential for the survival of prehistoric to Roman remains is considered to be moderate. The potential for medieval and post-medieval remains is considered to be low.
