Abstract:
The evaluation established the presence of both prehistoric and late(?) post-medieval remains, but did not identify any Pleistocene / potential Palaeolithic deposits or Roman activity. Beneath a thick layer of modern debris in the southern part of the site was evidence for successive layers of hill wash built up against the steeply sloping edge of a natural gravel terrace overlooking the River Brain. Within this, presumably residual but certainly not well-travelled, Neolithic worked and burnt flint and pottery were discovered 2.4m below the current ground surface, in the lower levels of the sequence. At the front of the property a large, probably late 19th century, roadside quarry pit was discovered, while the remaining areas investigated contained no archaeological features or deposits. Generally, the evidence suggested that considerable parts of the site have been affected in the past by episodes of quarrying and/ or dumping and levelling, particularly in the case of the latter at the rear of the site. However, the prehistoric remains uncovered occurred at such depth below the existing ground surface that they do not appear to have been affected by past episodes of quarrying and are also unlikely to be impacted upon in a significant way by the current development proposals.
