Abstract: |
As a result of an archaeological condition on the planning permission for the construction of a new leisure centre with associated car parking and access, at Letchworth Hall Hotel, Letchworth, Herts, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owners to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring of the groundworks. A variety of features were investigated and recorded in the course of the works, including two sections of post-medieval walling to the south of the hotel, a number of rubbish dumps, several linear features, and four possible quarries. In addition, there were a number of pits and postholes scattered across the site. Although no dating evidence was retrieved from the majority of the features, the extent to which the ground had been made up, levelled and landscaped suggests that most are post-medieval or modern in origin. The study area would appear to be away from the focus of medieval activity. |
