Abstract:
A range of residential, commercial and recreational developments are planned for the Proposed Southern Expansion Land south of Peterborough. An initial programme of geophysical scanning led to the identification of five areas (A-E) which would be subject to detailed geophysical survey and trial trench evaluation (Phase 1). Further trenching (Phase 2) may subsequently be required, dependent on the results of a fieldwalking survey, to be carried out at a later date. Albion Archaeology was commissioned to carry out the evaluation, for the Phase 1 trial trench evaluation. The results of the evaluation can be summarised as follow: Area A (7 trenches): undated remains. Area B (6 trenches): Iron Age enclosures and settlement activity. Area C (28 trenches): dense Roman settlement remains with Iron Age origins. Area D (39 trenches): Iron Age and Roman enclosures and settlement remains. Area E (39 trenches): Iron Age remains. Saxon sunken-featured building, post-medieval activity possibly related to Napoleonic Prisoner of War Camp. Albion Archaeology was also commissioned to conduct fieldwalking survey. The distribution of artefacts recovered during the fieldwalking revealed no significant concentrations that would indicate the presence of sub-surface archaeological remains.
