Abstract: |
In 2006 Foundations Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological excavation in advance of development on land at Penhale Round, Fraddon, Cornwall (NGR: SW 9080 5725). Due to project and time constraints, it was only possible to excavate a limited sample of the study area. An archaeological watching brief was undertaken to monitor the subsequent development groundworks. The excavation revealed a Romano-Cornish fogou (feature 101) and a stone-built hut/ancillary building (feature 102) within the Round. The Round inner enclosure ditch was identified at the northeast end of the investigation area. Numerous other features including postholes, pits, gullies, hearth pits, a cobbled surface and the possible remains of a rampart revetment wall were also present. Limited evidence for crop processing and industrial activity was provided by the presence of a quern stone and lumps of industrial waste (slag). The dating evidence from the site was dominated by Romano-Cornish material, with only limited evidence for earlier or later activity. |
