Abstract:
The River Lark runs to the south-west of the site, through a channel raised approximately 2m above the surrounding landscape. Geotechnical works in the northern and central areas of the site have revealed no alluvial or peat deposits and indicate that the redevelopment of the site in the 1960s had a major impact upon these areas of the site. The level of previous impacts in the southern part of the site, beyond the geotechnical survey, is not established and there may be more potential for currently unrecorded archaeological remains. A Late Iron Age fastener was found within the site by a metal detectorist and a small amount of Roman finds are recorded immediately to the north-east of the site. No further information is held on these finds. No other archaeological remains have been recorded within the site. An Iron Age settlement has been recorded on locally higher ground 400m to the south-west of the site, to the south of the River Lark. The medieval centre of Mildenhall lay to the north-west of the site, and the site itself appears to have been agricultural land on the outskirts of the town, remaining undeveloped until the 20th-century.
