Abstract: |
Archaeology South-East undertook an archaeological evaluation in advance of proposed residential development at 28 Church Road, Wimbledon, SW19 5DH. Three test trenches were mechanically excavated and recorded over two days on 30th April and 1st May 2009. The work identified remains from the post-medieval period, together with a very small quantity of residual medieval and perhaps prehistoric material. The post-medieval remains comprised a gravel pathway and planting bed probably related to the 18th-century Belvedere Estate. There was also evidence that the site had been significantly truncated by quarrying for sands and gravels, probably between mid 17th and mid 18th century. |
