Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation and desk-based assessment were undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd (CFA) in November 2009 at Spynie, Elgin. A dovecot (NJ 2072 6442) was identified within the development area during a desk-based study; cartographic sources suggest the site has remained as either open or cultivated land from at least the period of Roy's survey (1747-55). A total of 231 trenches were excavated, amounting to 16,616m², just over 7% of the proposed development area. Four trenches contained archaeological features: Trenches 68, 70 and 72 contained a shallow linear ditch running along the same alignment as the current field boundary, suggesting this feature is an older field boundary ditch. Trench 138 contained an isolated pit of unknown function. No finds were recovered from either feature. No upstanding remains of the dovecot were visible, and no trace of the site was found through during trenching. No other features of archaeological significance were identified during the evaluation. |
