Abstract:
In July 2008, North Pennines Archaeology Ltd undertook an archaeological field evaluation at Allerton Park Quarry, North Yorkshire (NGR: SE 4050 6100). The work was commissioned by Andrew Josephs, Archaeological Consultant, on behalf of his client, Hanson Ltd, in order to provide further information to allow an informed planning decision to be made by North Yorkshire County Council Heritage Section, for a proposed extension to the quarry. Planning permission has been submitted for the extension but because of potential archaeological remains within the extraction boundary, the groundworks have to be preceeded by a programme of archaeological evaluation. An evaluation consisting of fifteen trenches and two test pits was undertaken between 9th-24th July 2008. The trenches were excavated to assess geophysical accuracy, to examine the areas of topographical interest, to examine areas of environmental potential and to provide evidence of plough truncation as required by North Yorkshire County Council. Eight of the trenches (Trench 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10 and 14) measured 25m in length and 2m in width. Five of the trenches (Trench 5, 7, 8, 11 and 12) measured 50m in length and 2m in width. Two of the trenches measured 10m in length and 2m in width (Trench 13 and 15) and the two test pits measured 2m by 2m. The evaluation supports the conclusion that the substantial archaeological remains, which relate to a Roman farmstead, are located primarily to the immediate north of the area investigated by the 2007 NAA excavations. However, outlying areas to the north also show some evidence of linear features, which may also have had some relationship to this settlement. Therefore, it is recommended that archaeological mitigation be sought prior to further groundworks at the site.
