Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring took place at Guissney Place, Porthleven, Cornwall, in advance of the construction of 34 affordable homes. The topsoil strip revealed a series of historic field boundaries, most of which had been lost since 1995, and almost all of which formed a logical element of a field system. The place-name evidence suggests this field system was post-medieval in date, enclosing the major part of Torleven Down. A single slight and sinuous medieval ditch was also revealed, together with a small number of Prehistoric pits. These had all been heavily truncated by modern ploughing. One of the pits contained the base of a Bronze Age urn, and may represent the remains of a ploughed-out barrow. A group of four pits contained structured deposits of burnt material, including late Bronze Age pottery and quern fragments. These were radiocarbon dated to c.1120-910 cal BC, and were probably associated with a single wooden post. This had been removed and the post-hole sealed with a large flat stone, almost certainly as part of a 'closing rite'. The pottery, being a transitional form of Trevisker ware, is of inherent importance, as the only clear parallels for this material are to be found in the less securely dated Phase 5 deposits of the Bronze Age site at Gwithian.. |
