Abstract: |
In 2007 - 2009 the Acton Scott Heritage Project re-examined the site of the Roman villa at Acton Scott, Shropshire. A geophysical survey confirmed the location of a cropmark enclosure ditch and found a rectangular structure within it. It also suggested the presence of a number of other features outside the enclosure ditch. Shovel-pit testing produced a small quantity of small pieces of brick and pottery of Roman date. In September 08 a first season of trial excavations examined the southern arm of the enclosure ditch and the rectangular structure within the enclosure. A second season of trial excavations in September 2009 examined further the structure within the enclosure. These excavations also examined some of the features identified by the geophysical survey outside the eastern side of the enclosure. The investigations demonstrated that there are well-preserved archaeological features and deposits associated with both the cropmark enclosure and the Roman villa surviving on the site. |
