Abstract: |
AOC Archaeology Group undertook a watching brief at Beddington Sewage Treatment Works, Sutton. The work comprised the recording of geotechnical investigation undertaken on site. Undisturbed deposits were identified in all test pits and boreholes monitored, consisting of an alluvial clay deposit containing shelly inclusions overlain by River Terrace Gravels and gravelly soil horizons, capped by a thin horizon of peat. Made ground and topsoil deposits, suspected to be related to the construction of the treatment works, sealed the undisturbed deposits. The only significant deposit identified was an early peat horizon located between the alluvial clay and River Terrace Gravel deposits. The stratigraphic location of this peat deposit suggests it may be Palaeolithic in date and of great significance. |
