Abstract:
This archaeological desk-based assessment was commissioned as part of the consideration of the erection of polytunnels and the excavation of three new ponds at Cobrey Farms, Coleraine Buildings, Coughton, Ross on Wye, Herefordshire. This study was specifically commissioned to assess the potential for archaeological remains to be present within the area of the proposed ponds. The location of the proposed development site at Cobrey Farm is split into three areas as shown on Figure 1 as A, B and C.The potential for prehistoric remains in the area is low, except in Area C where the stone macehead was recovered, where it must be considered moderate to high. The chance of Roman remains in the site is though to be low, but moderate in Area A. Here, however, the remains are likely to be limited to field boundaries. The area appears to have been arable or farmland since the medieval period and the potential for remains of medieval, post-medieval and early modern date is considered low, although there is a low to moderate potential for quarry pits to be present in the vicinity of Area B.
