Abstract:		 Archaeological monitoring was undertaken by South West Archaeology Limited in association with the construction of a bungalow, garage and access to a triangular piece of land to the rear/west of The Old Smithy, South Molton Street, Chulmleigh. The topsoil from the footprint of the access road, garage and house plot was stripped under strict archaeological supervision and in the area stripped for the bungalow three linear features were exposed all representing elements within a system of post-medieval field drains. In the area stripped for the site access and garage a linear and cobbled surfaces probably relate to the garden/yard of the (17th century?) cottage demolished after 1908. The cobbled area (112/117) was bisected by what appears to have been a cobbled drain. A hedgebank was also recorded and a selection of medieval and post medieval finds were recovered from the topsoil.
