Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was conducted in advance of signage improvements to the B6318 at Harlow Hill, Northumberland. The site lies within the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site and scheduled monument consent was required for the undertaking of all intrusive groundworks. The watching brief monitored the excavation of six foundation pits to accommodate new traffic signs along the highway verge of the B6318 and two adjoining roads. The natural sub-stratum was not encountered and the investigations generally recorded an undated subsoil overlain by dump/levelling layers. Archaeological remains of potentially greater significance were encountered in Foundation Pit 6 where a sandstone deposit may represent part of a surface or structural element associated with Hadrian's Wall. However, no dating evidence was found to verify this. Modern 'made ground', overlain by a topsoil with turf comprised the uppermost deposits recorded. |
