Abstract: |
Archaeological watching brief carried out during renovation and conversion of late 15th century timber-framed gatehouse. A total of 14 timbers that remained substantially whole during the removal works were recorded as part of the watching brief. A watching brief carried out during limited drainage works around the gatehouse uncovered no evidence that the existing gatehouse had replaced an earlier structure in the same position, although if this was always the main point of access in to the rectorial complex, then an earlier structure was almost certainly once present here. Observation during the removal of internal stairs in the east part of the gatehouse and from the erection of scaffolding did not add any further structural information. |
