Abstract: |
Following a proposal by United Utilities to construct a new water main measuring 160m long and running adjacent to Bradford Lane, Nether Alderley, Cheshire, the Historic Environment Records Officer recommended documentary research and a walkover survey of an area around the proposed development (May 2007). 21 sites of archaeological interest were identified. Within the study area was one medieval feature, an iron bloomery (Site 07), four Listed Buildings (Sites 01-04), post-medieval in date, and five sites recorded in the Cheshire Historic Environment Record (HER; Sites 05-09). The area was mostly a post-medieval and Industrial Period agricultural landscape, with such features as field boundaries (Sites 12, 15, 18, 20), marl pits (Sites 10, 17, 19), a drainage system (Site 11) and a water/feeding hollow (Site 16). There are remains of sandstone quarries (Sites 06, 08, 21) and associated tracks/roads (Sites 05, 13, 14), as well as a disused hollow-way/lane previously known as Cow Lane (Site 09) all of which date to the Industrial Period. Of the 21 sites, four (12, 13, 14, 18) were considered likely to be affected by the development works. A watching brief (June 2007) investigated sites 13, 14 and 18. Site 12 had already been removed prior to commencement. The earthwork remains of field boundary walls were observed (Site 18) in Field 3 and the nature of the boundaries between the fields on site was noted. No evidence was observed for the Sites 13 and 14, and very little else of archaeological interest was encountered. |
