Abstract: |
The currently standing remnants of the former sugar refining plant at Scawby Brook, Brigg are to be demolished in advance of the construction of a renewable energy plant. A Level 2 building survey was carried out as a condition of planning permission. The buildings subject to this development comprise a complex of industrial and administrative structures. The surviving buildings represent a group of additional structures to the main process factory, which was built in 1928 to refine sugar from sugar beet as part of a scheme to reduce dependence on overseas sugar; it was still in operation in 1983 but closed not long afterwards(the main factory was demolished after 1994). The buildings are considered to represent a good example of local industrial architecture, constructed of local materials, but have been altered over time as their uses have changed. |
