Abstract:
Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust carried out an archaeological evaluation and excavation at the Priory, St Ives, Cambridgeshire. Fieldwork revealed evidence for activity from the prehistoric period onwards, although the main phases of occupation date to the Romano-British, Saxon, medieval and post-mediaeval periods. A complex of Romano-British agricultural enclosures was present. The enclosures were succeeded by an early Anglo Saxon grubenhaus and ancillary features during the 6th or 7th centuries. A substantial ditch was constructed across the site during the 13th or 14th centuries and may have been the western ditch of St Ives Priory. A ubiquitous post-medieval 'garden' soil was identified sealing earlier archaeological features/ deposits. This material contained a high density of mixed finds from the underlying archaeology.
