This project was prompted by plans to develop an area of land measuring approximately 30m (N-S) x 25m (E-W) on the eastern edge of the Boston Road Industrial Estate in Horncastle, Lincolnshire. Development proposals for the site involved the construction of a portal-frame industrial unit, together with new parking, vehicular access and drainage works. The scheme was approved by East Lindsey District Council on the 24th of May 2005, with a condition requesting that an archaeological watching brief be carried out in conjunction with the development groundworks. Consultation with Dr B. Lott, of Lincolnshire County Council Conservation Services demonstrated that the site lies within a rich historic landscape, with archaeological remains from the prehistoric, Roman and medieval periods well represented around Horncastle. In the vicinity of the site itself, post-medieval remains have been identified. Lincs Archaeo-tech (LAT) was appointed by the developer, Everton Construction Services Ltd., on the 29th of June 2005 to provide the required archaeological services, and attendance was undertaken on an intermittent basis between the 15th of August and the 20th of December 2005. In spite of the site's apparent archaeological potential, however, the project did not reveal any direct evidence for ancient occupation, with all the deposits and features present appearing to be of either modern, undated or natural (i.e., geological) origin. | ||||||||||||||||||
