Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was maintained during the excavation of the footings for a conservatory at Barling House, Winchelsea, East Sussex, on the 29th March 2010. No archaeological features were noted, and only a small number of finds were recovered from the footing trenches. The earliest artefacts were three pieces of peg tile dating to somewhere between the mid to late 13th up to the 15th centuries, and a fragment of brick dating to between the 14th and mid 16th century. Previous research suggested that the site was used for gardens from the Medieval period through to the end of the 19th century when Barling House was constructed. This watching brief appears to confirm that there was no earlier occupation on this site.
