Abstract: |
An evaluation by trial trenching was carried out prior to a residential development. Two trenches (total area 48 sq m) were excavated, representing approximately 3.4% of the whole site and 17% of the area most affected by the proposed development. The site was on level ground at approximately 59.3m OD. The natural stratum consisted of superficial deposits of Cover Sand. Prior to the archaeological evaluation a detached house (Braholme) had occupied the site. Within the footprint of the former house disturbed soil deposits overlay the natural sand. Elsewhere, layers of sandy subsoil and modern garden soil overlay the natural sand. Some modern services were encountered but no archaeological features or deposits were seen and no artefacts were recovered. |
