Abstract: |
Four trenches were investigated. Natural London clay was found across the site. In the W part of the site, natural was truncated by modern foundations. In the NE part of the site, the foundations of a 19th century building, seen on the 1894 OS map, cut through the clay. In the central portion of the site, gravelly clay containing flecks of coal and building material overlays the natural, which suggests that it is dumped material, possibly to raise the ground surface. This is cut by two other 19th-century brick walls that are probably either garden walls or the remains of garden features such as a green house or gazebo. This was all overlain by top soil. |
